Fiber and nails. 2017. "Northern California" is a fiber "painting" on a large loom mounted to a wall. Rather than using the traditional method of weaving which strategically stacks layered patterns of weft threads on top of one another, the loom was utilized as a canvas and the yarn as paint. With intention, none of the weft threads were secured and instead hung loosely as a metaphor to the fragility of our ecosystem's health. In addition, the installation's intention is to bring awareness to the beauty that is often covered up by the overwhelmingly busy culture of the Bay Area. "Noise Pollution I" is the first of a small series of drawings made to further investigate the concepts explored in my installations such as geo-cultural "noise" and visual translations of sound. The layers of "noise" overlapping the landscape points to the ways in which characteristics of modern life (ie. frenetic lifestyles, internet culture, television, etc) often distract from and pollute our sensibilities to the grandiose beauty of our natural environment and a sense of peace within ourselves. Soft pastel on paper. 2017. "Noise Pollution II" is inspired by the lines of the Bay Area Freeways such as 680, 580, and 880 as seen on a map. The jagged and undulating quality of the lines are used to mimic the terrain surrounding the Bay Area, a metaphor to the human's innate desire to be with the slower-paced qualities of nature, regardless of how immersed we are in our fast-paced lifestyles. In relationship to my installations, the drawing attempts to visualize sound, in this case, the "noise pollution" apparent in the geography's culture. Soft pastel on paper. 2017. "Noise Pollution III" attempts to capture the mesmerizing quality of noise pollution. In this particular piece, Ho used the element of line to compose her own musical notation - each line representing a piece of a melody. For example, the long, yellow line above to the left would represent a long, sustained sound whilst the smaller repetition of lines below play a quicker tempo. Here, noise pollution is compared to the hypnotic, tantalizing qualities of music.
