Portal to Child Spirit

Solo Exhibition | MRKT Gallery, San Francisco

FYUSHA: PORTAL TO CHILD SPIRIT is a series of playful illustrations of an imaginary world conjured up by a mysterious “child spirit”. Pulling inspiration from my design hero, Mitsuo Katsui, I became fascinated by the process of combining illustration and graphic design to inform and refresh my approach to surrealism.

Giving life to script became the method by which I could play with the idea of “in-between” meanings by doubling the use of characters in language as also characters of a story. These characters you see traversing through the collection are logographics of ancient Vietnamese translating to “em” meaning “little one”, and or về meaning “home”.

Whether or not these characters are entering or exiting, I wanted to leave ambiguous for you to decide, and instead place emphasis on the notion of eternal movement. Portals are dark, disorienting, and can be disturbing. The message I hope to send is, whatever portals are upon you, there is only way: through.
